The Department of Chemistry was established as a regular course in the academic year 2008-09, the inception year of the University. The main focus of the department’s postgraduate program is to instill the necessary spark and provide the scientific impetus for students to pursue a career in chemistry. The Department offers two year course in M.Sc Analytical Chemistry and M.Sc Organic Chemistry with an intake of 36 students with papers specialized in Organic Chemistry, Inorganic chemistry and allied areas. The programme layout is demanding and is constantly upgraded to incorporate current advances in chemistry.
The Department of Chemistry also offers research programme leading to award of full-time and part-time M.Phil and Ph.D., programmes from the academic year 2009-10. Admissions into the research programees are based on the Andhra Pradesh Research Common Entrance Test (APRCET) organized by Andhra Pradesh State Council of Higher Education (APSCHE). The research interests of the faculty are: Natural Products and Medicinal Chemistry, Theoretical Chemistry, Synthetic Organic Chemistry, Coordination and Bioinorganic Chemistry, and Chemistry of Nanomaterials.
The faculty of this department is actively engaged in teaching and research since its inception and published more than 200 research publications in various National & International journals of high repute. The Department also organized eight conferences/seminars/symposia sponsored by DST, APSCHE, etc. The department entered into Memorandum of Understanding (MOU’s) with Laurus Labs. The department also provides opportunities to its postgraduate students for pursuing internships at private companies so that they can also gain the “industry” experience. It also has a fully functional placement cell for assisting students who want to join the industry. The alumni of this department occupied high positions in teaching, research and scientific organizations spread over India and abroad.
